Dear friends and comrades,

The Palestinian journalist Anas al-Sharif was martyred one year ago this week. The IOF assassinated al-Sharif alongside five of his colleagues — Mohammed Qraiqea, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed al-Khalidi — in a targeted strike on the journalists’ tent outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. 

Al-Sharif was one of Gaza’s brave journalists who stayed in the North throughout Israel’s genocidal campaign of destruction and whose reporting reached a Western audience. 

In the immediate aftermath of his death, the New York War Crimes Editorial Collective connected with colleagues of al-Sharif to collect testimonies honoring him and his work. 

Anas, his colleagues told us, would not have wanted to be remembered as a singular hero, but as a servant of the Palestinian cause. So our task expanded. 

Over the course of the following year, we gathered spoken testimonies from his fellow reporters, photographers, cameramen, journalism professors, students, and workers across the media sector in Gaza. Each contributor was asked to record a personal remembrance of one or more martyrs, to tell a small part of the history that, as the journalist Samira Nassar says in her testimony, should be “written in gold.” 

Today, our ask of you is simple: Please listen to the testimonies; read their translations; share and spread the truth about Gaza’s journalists and the genocide they risk everything to document. You can find the project here.

The Zionist entity has killed over 260 journalists in Gaza since the Al-Aqsa Flood. The testimonies shared by their colleagues that we have collected, transcribed, translated, and published remind us that each martyr’s loss is immeasurable. 

The Living Record is an oral archive, an interactive memorial, and a testament to the collective will of Gaza’s journalists, who choose the path of truth despite being marked for death by the Israeli occupation and the complicit U.S. media.

This archive is alive and evolving. Between now and October 7, 2026, we will publish another two dozen testimonies. We plan to collect and publish eulogies for more of the many journalists who have been martyred in Israel’s wars of aggression throughout the region, and we will continue to amplify the voices of Gaza. 

Israel kills the messengers, but it cannot kill the story. As Hazem Rajab says of his brothers in the field, those who depart as martyrs remain alive in our hearts.

New York: Join us Friday in honoring Gaza’s martyred journalists

One year after the martyrdom of Anas al-Sharif and his colleagues, Writers Against the War on Gaza, the Palestinian Youth Movement, and the Palestinian Feminist Collective have organized a night to remember the life and struggle of al-Sharif, to mourn his martyrdom and that of his fellow journalists, and to understand how mainstream Western media ignored and facilitated their deaths.

We will hear from Anas’s colleagues, mentors, and friends across all sectors and ages to learn how Gaza’s journalists grew and transformed as the genocide accelerated. Among them are his nephew, the journalist Mosab al-Sharif; his mentor Imad Zakout, whom Anas has described "as a father and a teacher in this field"; and Hossam Shabbat's brother Wissam, who has dedicated himself to continuing the legacy of Gaza's journalists, a torch they all take from both Anas and Hossam. 

Journalist Sana Saeed will also be speaking. 

As we continue to mobilize against the occupation, it is our duty to ensure the sacrifices of Gaza’s journalists in the face of Western complicity are never forgotten.

I do not allow grief or emptiness to stop me from moving forward. That was how Uncle Anas lived too. When he felt like crying, a tear might fall, but then he held the rest back and carried on. He never allowed emptiness to take root in his heart. Because once that emptiness takes hold of us, we surrender. We lose our passion and come to a standstill. Emptiness can break a person. But Uncle Anas always chose to keep going. Whatever loss he endured, he thanked God, accepted it as God’s decree and will, and continued on his path.
